At Auckland Zoo we’re incredibly lucky to have such a generous community! A few weeks ago a local family – namely Spencer Roth, his wife and children – grew a whopping 270 kg pumpkin for the Kumeu Show, and decided to donate this masterpiece to our elephant girls Burma and Anjalee.

Animal enrichment is all about mixing up an animal’s daily routine, and this ginormous pumpkin surely did that! Our girls had a LOT of fun breaking it up, and spent two days devouring it! Burma and Anjalee eat on average around 120 - 140kg of food each, every single day, with their usual diet comprising of browse (twigs, leaves and vegetation) with their favourites being bamboo, puka and banana palm sourced by Auckland Zoo’s very own browse team.

A huge thank you to the Roth family for your incredible contribution to our elephant girls’ diets! Watch along to witness our girls’ delight as they indulge in this special gift.
