Another day, another animal enrichment donation!

Our wonderful friends at Mt Smart Stadium donated some grass turf to our special takahē!

Takahē enjoy eating the grass shoots, so our wonderful keepers either plant the turf into trays for them to eat daily, or in this instance leave it unplanted and scatter insects like meal worms throughout, which encourages them to use their natural behaviours and forage for their food. Insects are part of our takahē diet often given as a treat, they also get grated carrot or little amounts of cooked kumera. Their main diet consists of a specifically made takahē pellet, which ensures they are meeting all their nutritional requirements.

We’re proud to provide health checks for wild takahē each year on behalf of Department of Conservation's Takahē Recovery Programme, which spans several unique sites in New Zealand’s North Island. If you’d like to support our Wild Work in Aotearoa, learn more here.
