We have an otterly awesome arrival – welcome Jingga!
Female otter Jingga (Indonesian for orange) has arrived from Taipei Zoo and has been busy exploring her new habitat on our South East Asia Jungle Track.
Three-year old Jingga has been paired with male otter Agus (nearly six-years-old) as part of the international zoos breeding and advocacy programme for Asian small-clawed otters.
This week she was introduced to Agus and our keepers say the pair have been getting along swimmingly, which bodes well for the future! It’s early days and while Jingga is settling in we can’t guarantee you’ll be able to see her straight away.
Asian small-clawed otters are native to Indonesia, southern China, southern India, the Philippines and Southeast Asia. Known for their dexterity, they’re the smallest and most terrestrial of all 13 otter species. This is why their Auckland Zoo habitat features sunny grassy areas for resting and sunbathing, as well as a running stream for foraging and swimming in.
Keep an eye out for her over the coming weeks!
