Moving around the Zoo on wheels

Over 95% of Auckland Zoo is accessible by wheelchair, prams and by mobility scooter. A map that shows inaccessible areas is available for free. Please ask our cashiers or our staff at the Information Centre near the main entrance.

Wheelchairs and mobility scooter hire:

  • Mobility Scooters are available for hire. These are $15.00 and you rent them from the Information Centre.
  • Wheel chairs are free to hire. We have two types – one is self propelled and the other type requires someone to push the wheel chair.

To book these, either call +64 9 360 3805 or email reservations@aucklandzoo.co.nz. The pick up location for the mobility scooters and wheel chair is the Information Centre. All rentals will need a bond item (car keys or drivers license).

Assistance Dogs

Certified personal assistance dogs* who are fully vaccinated and trained are welcome to accompany their owners to the Zoo. Owners must present dog certification at time of, or before, entering the Zoo. Assistance dogs must be kept on a leash and under control at all times. Owners must clean up after any toileting. Dogs ‘in-training’ are not permitted.

We ask that you please contact us prior to your visit on +64 9 360 3805 or email reservations@aucklandzoo.co.nz.

No other animals are permitted to be brought in to the Zoo.

*if someone needs extra support to live their everyday life because of a disability or health problem then that support person is a carer.

Accessible Change Room

Auckland Zoo is proud to offer a fully accessible bathroom facility for Zoo visitors and for people in our wider local community whose disabilities mean they cannot use a standard accessible toilet.

This modern spacious facility features a specially designed toilet, change bed/table with hoist, an overhead shower, and a wash basin – all of which are height-adjustable to meet all needs.

Our accessible change room operates 24/7 via a remote intercom system (accessed on the exterior of the building) with an inbuilt security system to ensure everyone’s safety.

It is located outside of the Zoo, alongside the Zoo’s administration building on the edge of the main Auckland Zoo carpark.

If you need any additional assistance during your visit, please approach any staff member or Zoo volunteer. You can also visit the Information Centre near the main entrance.

Accessible car parking is available in the Motions Road car park, closest to the main entrance to the Zoo, for vehicles displaying a current mobility parking permit.

If the designated parks are full, please talk to our friendly carpark secruity team or our concierge.

Please refer to our map for wheelchair accessible toilet facilities.

Plus, our accessbile bathroom facility and change room for those whose disabilities mean they cannot use a standard accessible toilet, operates 24/7 via a remote intercom system. It is located outside of the Zoo, just alongside the Zoo’s administration building on the edge of the main Auckland Zoo carpark.
