When the sun goes down, the stars come out and most of our kararahe (animals) are ready to sleep, the undercover Domes at Auckland Zoo will come alive with whānau fun to celebrate Matariki.
On Saturdays 6, 13 and 20 July (5pm – 8pm), in partnership with our friends, Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, we invite you and your whānau and friends to come and enjoy great kai, waiata, kapa haka, tākaro (games), Kōrero Pūrākau (story telling), and so much more!
Enjoy a Matariki-themed interactive art installation – a fun, inspirational and dynamic experience for everyone.
Along with hourly waiata and kapa haka with the wonderful Hiwa Kapa Haka Group, there will be weaving workshops, craft stalls and out in our plaza, impromptu kararahe (animal) encounters with some of our native nocturnal taonga.
Kai options for purchase include delicious hangi dishes (meats and vegan/vegetarian options) and adults will enjoy a complimentary beer, wine or kawakawa tea.
Auckland Zoo’s Matariki evenings (free for all children up to 14 years, and $10 for adults) are part of Auckland’s 2019 Matariki Festival and Elemental Tāmaki Makaurau.
