Our Early Childhood Education classes focus on endemic New Zealand species where kids will learn more about our animals and their habitat, and includes an interactive animal encounter with one of our zookeepers.

ECE session topics we offer

Session Outline:

  1. Children will be explorers looking for taonga.
  2. The tamariki will be read a story using puppets and actions, participate in activities that engage their different senses, and journey through selected habitats in Te Wao Nui, so children can observe NZ species.
  3. The session will finish with an animal encounter with one of the zookeepers!

During the session students will:

  1. Name and identify some New Zealand animals
  2. Get introduced to the concept 'nocturnal'
  3. Give an example of how some NZ animals are suited to being nocturnal

Session Outline:

  1. Children will be explorers looking for taonga.
  2. The tamariki will be read a story using puppets and actions, participate in activities that engage their gross and fine motor skills, and journey through selected habitats in Te Wao Nui, so children can observe New Zealand species.
  3. The session will finish with an animal encounter with one of the zookeepers!

During the session students will:

  1. Name and identify some New Zealand birds.
  2. Know what birds need to find in their habitat to stay alive.
  3. Introduce the concept of adaptation, and why birds beaks adapt to the kind of food they eat.

Session Outline:

  1. Children are kaitiaki (guardians) of Aotearoa.
  2. As Pest Detectives, using manaakitanga (kindness) and mauri (respect for living things) they will learn about how to keep New Zealand species safe from pests.
  3. The tamariki will be read a story using puppets and actions, participate in activities that engage their literacy and senses, and journey through selected habitats in Te Wao Nui, so children can observe New Zealand species.
  4. The session will finish with an animal encounter with one of the zookeepers!

During the session students will:

  1. Understand what a pest is and how they are endangering New Zealand species.
  2. Children will develop an appreciation for being kaitiaki/guardians.
  3. Recognise ways they can identify pests and New Zealand species.
