Can children attend a Safari Night?

Yes, children can attend a Safari Night. They must be at least 5 years old and accompanied by an adult. If your group has children under this age then you can email to discuss the options here.

What are the minimum and maximum numbers required for a Safari Night?

The minimum number of people for a Safari Night Walk is 20.

For groups smaller than this you will need to book into a Public Safari Night which are run during the school holidays.

Kids Only Safari Nights are held during the school holidays, so these are another option for groups of less than 20.

The maximum number for a sleepover is 50 and for a BBQ and Walk the maximum is 80.

What sort of food will be served?

The barbeque dinner consists of sausages, bread, potato salad, coleslaw and cordial. Supper is hot chocolate and biscuits. Breakfast is toast, cornflakes and weetbix. A vegetarian option is also available. If required, we can arrange different catering at an extra cost.

Can we bring alcohol to our Safari Night?

No, all Safari Nights are strictly non-alcoholic. If you are wanting a function which includes alcohol you will need to book a private function through the functions department.

A Safari Night Walk can be arranged as part of your function if required. You can discuss this with the functions team at the time of booking. Phone +64 9 360 3813 or email functionsweb@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz.

Where will we be sleeping?

If you have booked in for the sleepover option you will be sleeping in The Old Elephant House. It is a communal sleeping area which will be shared by the entire group.

Are there showers available for use?

No, there are no showers available for the Safari Night, only toilet facilities.

What time does our Safari Night begin and end?

If you are booked in for a sleepover, your Safari Night arrival time is 4.30pm and finish time is 8am the following morning.

If you have booked in for a BBQ and Walk, your arrival time is 4.30pm and finish time is approximately 10pm.

We are flexible on these timings, so if you need to alter these you can discuss this when making your booking. Please phone us on (09) 360 4700 or email.

Do I need to bring a torch for the night walk?

We advise that you bring a torch for the night walk. All torches must be covered in red cellophane.

I have booked in for the sleepover, what bedding do I need to bring?

We will supply you with a mattress to sleep on, but you need to bring your own sleeping bag, blankets, sheets and pillows.

If the weather is bad will my Safari Night be cancelled?

If the weather is excessively bad we may cancel or postpone your Safari Night. If there is only light rain or wind your Safari Night will go ahead.

Which animals will I see on the night walk?

Your night walk includes bats, lizards, hippos, elephant, cheetah, lions and tigers. Please note that most of our animals have the choice to be outside in their enclosures or inside under cover so we cannot guarantee sightings of all animals.

What else can we do in the area before or after the Safari Night?

The Zoo is located next to Western Springs Park so this is a great place to explore. MOTAT is also just down the road and is a popular venue for groups that attend Safari Nights.
