Power factor equipment ensures electricity is not 'lost' due to
poor efficiency. Auckland Zoo's efficiency is now running at a
factor of 0.99.
* Heating and lighting timers have been installed where appropriate.
* Hot and cold water pipes insulated to reduce energy spent heating and cooling.
* Variable speed drives on pumps in Sea lion Life Support System mean that when the animals are sleeping, the system is not working as hard as it is during the day when they are active. This resulted in a halving of power required for this exhibit!
* Energy consumption is monitored via an online service allowing us to identify high use areas and any 'spikes' and deal with them immediately.
* Staff are encouraged to turn off computer monitors every night and while on annual leave.
