One of the key ways we
support wildlife conservation in the wild (also called field or
in situ conservation), both in New Zealand and around the
world, is through the Auckland Zoo Conservation Fund.
It is support that is becoming more critical than ever.
"The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has forecast that unless we do something, 30% of the world's species of wildlife will disappear over the next 50 years. Zoos are playing a critical role in helping prevent this, and Auckland Zoo is proud to be at the forefront of these efforts," says Auckland Zoo director, Jonathan Wilcken.

- We support our own staff to develop or utilise their
specialist skills and participate in field conservation
initiatives. These can be projects led by Auckland Zoo or by other
conservation partners
- We provide financial resources for external organisations and
individuals to carry out vital field conservation work
One of the ways we provide financial support to organisations and individuals is through our Small Grants Programme.
Level of funding
The Auckland Zoo Conservation Fund Small Grants Programme exists to help provide relatively small levels of funding for ongoing projects or pilot programmes with clear conservation value. This programme of funding is open to individuals or organisations for projects in New Zealand or for projects in countries outside the First World - though applicants can be based anywhere in the world.
Small grants will be awarded up to a maximum of NZD5,000. However, in most cases, successful grants will be in the region of NZD1,000 - 3,000. The amount applied for through the programme should represent a minimum of 25% of the project's overall budget.
Funding deadlines
We accept applications to the Small Grants Programme throughout the year, but only two rounds of grants are made.
Deadlines for the next funding rounds are:
