Conservation and Auckland Zoo
Conservation is at the heart of Auckland Zoo. Ask any staff member, and they will tell you that what drives them is their passion for conservation – the ability to make a difference to wildlife and the environment, and to inspire others to do the same. The conservation goals of Auckland Zoo are reflected in our mission statement: "To focus the Zoo's resources to benefit conservation and provide exciting visitor experiences which inspire and empower people to take positive action for wildflife and the environment." Auckland Zoo is committed to achieving the conservation goals set out in the Strategic Plan and links all revenue streams to the Auckland Zoo Conservation Fund. 1 per cent of gross revenue is directed to the fund, and this figure will grow in the coming years. We are already on track to deliver 1.5% in the upcoming financial year! And of course this does not take into account your direct support through donations and conservation fund events. The Zoo's conservation efforts are lead by the Auckland Zoo Conservation Office – comprising a Conservation Officer and a Conservation Committee made up of zoo staff from several different departments across the zoo. With Zoo management, they manage the Auckland Zoo Conservation Fund (AZCF). The Conservation Office has made the commitment that 100% of all contributions to the AZCF will be directed towards field conservation, with all administration costs being met by the Zoo contribution.
